Long Ride

Saturday is Brownie’s long day, so I rode my bike to the barn and took him for a fast 12-mile-ride. Maybe because he was well rested after me being in Arizona for a week, maybe because of the cooler, drier weather or maybe because I took a rout that he hasn’t really been on before, Brownie was faster than I could believe.
Starting with a ten minute walk, I alternated two miles of trotting and five minutes of walking. I think I could have gotten away with less walking, but as he was running really fast I didn’t want to overdo it, especially because he hasn’t really done many 12-mile-rides. At least not with me or much that I know of.
I rode mostly on the roads, under the 128-bridge and along Grissom Parkway. They all have wide grassy shoulders and I want Brownie to get used to it for the overnight ride Stephanie and I are planning for February.
Anyway, it was all very exciting and fun, because I didn’t have to push him which was good for my sore calves.
It’s so nice to see him improve his endurance quickly. A few weeks ago we’d never done more than 20 minutes of consecutive jogging, and now that’s considered a recovery or easy ride. I’m very proud of my Brown Cow!
